Driving In The USA And Canada - Car Insurance

The information on this page, although extensively checked and believed to be correct, is completely unofficial and is provided for general guidance purposes only.

Most American states have now begun to require some proof of insurance to be displayed on request to a police officer. If you are driving a rented car then the rental agreement will normally be sufficient for this purpose. You may wish to inquire when you pick up a rental car as to the local regulations in this regard.

If you will be driving a friend or relative's car while visiting the USA, you need to check that you will have valid insurance. I believe this may be problem for visitors from Britain because UK car insurance is for a vehicle while US and Canadian car insurance is for a driver.
